In Croatian education system we have National plan and program which define to teacher what they have to do in every subject and in every class. National plan defines the main goals for every subject we teach and which main concept and terms student has to learn and which education competence student has to develop trough specific subject.

Our elementary school system is divide in two parts, first part is from the first grade (6th or 7th year old) till fourth grade (10th or 11th year old) and the second part is from fifth grade till eight grade. In the first part student has just one teacher in subjects such as: math, Croatian language, music and art, physically training and nature and society. Different teacher is in the optional subject, religion. English language has different teacher too and it is obligatory from the first grade.

Our school system is usually organized in two shifts where students have about five to six hours of different subjects trough the day. From the fifth grade students have different teacher for every subject. Weakly workload is about twenty one hour per week. Student’s timetable is defined by the teacher in the beginning of the school year and every subject has different numbers of working hours per week, for example we do the math four days per week and every subject hour last 45’.

The main goal for us is how to correlate and integrate those different subjects and how to find causal connection between them, because that is one of the way where we are trying to interiorize knowledge and trying to learn our students how to be active learner.

In further text I will give you one example of correlation and integration subjects (math, Croatian language, nature and society, art and physical training) in second grade. I will not bother you with defining of the goals, main concept, key word etc. I will show you only students’ activities which I find them most interesting in this process.

Theme:

Math: Roman numbers

Croatian language: Noun and visit to the library

Nature and society: Time

Physical training: Walking in different formation with different tempo
